Mortal Realms

The Mortal Realms is a partwork magazine run by Hatchette for Games Workshop. Here, I’m collecting an list of the contents, rules and links to the individual items.

ForbiddenPlanet sells the things, lets you pic-and-mix, ships internationally, ships sooner and can be cheaper than the producer … when you purchase at least 11 issues at once.1

Delivered

Issue 01 / Chainrasp Horde and (Dreadfane) Sequitors (and dice)

Everyone panic bought this issue. There’s supposed to be another Chainrasp Horde on the way - you can see the not-blue ones in the promotional art.

Also in Issue 52 - Chainrasp Horde

Issue 02 / Myrmourn Banshees, Brush and Paint

The Wrath of Nagash

This guy has a fantasic style of case

… and free name tags

Issue 03 / Castigators and Gryph-Hound and Paint

Castigators and Gryph-Hound

The first goodboi.

This guy has a fantasic style of case

Issue 04 / Glaivewraith Stalkers and Paint

Glaivewraith Stalkers

This guy has a fantasic style of case

Issue 05 / Xandria Azurebolt

Xandria Azurebolt
  • Xandria Azurebolt is a Knight Incantor and the magazine’s exclusive miniature.

The legend is that this sculpt was done as a training exercise. It was given to a trainee sculptor as their first task and a throwaway piece. Nobody was expecting it to be worth producing … but it was quite good!

Issue 06 / Thorns of the Briar Queen

Thorns of the Briar Queen

I found these Horrible Children a joy to paint/finish.

There’s a fairly swish dedicated carrying case

There’s also a case for ALL the warbands from their season.

This guy has a fantasic style of case as well

Issue 07 / Paints

Discover More Stormhosts

Issue 08 / Celestar Ballistas

Celestar Ballistas

Issue 09 / Sequitors and Castigators

This is a “B sprue” from an “ABB sprue” from Soul Wars.

Issue 09 - Sequitors and Castigators

Issue 10 / Tomb Banshee

Issue 10 - Tomb Banshee

This is a delighful old vampire sculpt which comes with a square scenic base on the sprue and around one in the packet. Can be used to lead a Shriekr Host … if you get an extra pack of Myrmourn Banshees.

Issue 11 - Sigmarite Mausoleum (1 of 3)

Sigmarite Mausoleum

This is the first terrain issue and the first multi-part kit. The kit was previously called “Garden Of Morr” in the world that was.

Issue 12 - Knight-Questor

Issue 12 - Knight-Questor

Issue 13 / Paints and Drybrush

Issue 13 - Discover the Forces of Order

This was the first issue released durring the COVID-19 Lockdown in the UK.

Issue 14 / Dreadblade Harrows

Issue 14

I wanted doubles of this to make a batallion … but … the magazine sold out before I ordered a second one.

Issue 15 - Sigmarite Mausoleum (2 of 3)

Issue 15 - Sigmarite Mausoleum

This is the first terrain issue and the first multi-part kit. The kit was previously called “Garden Of Morr” in the world that was.

Issue 16 / Sequitors and Castigators

This is a “B sprue” from an “ABB sprue” from Soul Wars, and, it hase DICE!

Issue 16 - Sequitors and Castigators

Issue 17 / Dreadscythe Harridans

Issue 17 - Dreadscythe Harridans

This was the first “BaseGate” issue - the included bases (were the correct size but) had an extra hole in them and people were grumpy.

Issue 18 / Paints

Anvils of the Heldenhammer (Dryad Bark (Base, Brown) Leadbelcher (Base, Metallic Grey) Paint)

This issue is cheaper to buy in parts - unless you really want a game mat.

Issue 19 / Three New Nighthaunt Heroes

Three New Nighthaunt Heroes

Issue 20 ; Lord-Arcanum and Evocator-Prime (Soul Wars - Sprue E)

Lord-Arcanum and Evocator-Prime

This was the last issue listed on ForbiddenPlanet before the COVID-19 Lockdown caused Hatchette to slow down.

  • Lord-Arcanum (on Gryph-Charger)
    • this is from a sprue in Soul Wars
    • this is NOT [the one sold on its own][buyLordArcanum] - that one has a scenic base
  • Evocator-Prime
    • this is from a sprue in Soul Wars
    • I think that this model is just a unit leader

Issue 21 / Dreadscythe Harridans

Dreadscythe Harridans

This was the second “BaseGate” issue - it had “normal” 32mm bases and ones with a Blood Bowl hole. I saved the normal bases for BlackStone Fortress and glued cardboard over the Blood Bowl holes. The (cereal box grade) cardboard gave the bases some “lumpiness” which was good under the texture paint, so, I put it all over.

Issue 22 / Paints

Khorne, The Blood God

This is another “paint issue” and ironically includes “Mephiston Red” rather than “Khrone Red”

Mephiston Red has been my go-to colour for the roses on the Myrmourn Banshee bases the Thorns of the Briar Queen and the (scenic) Glaivewraith Stalkers. I’ll likely use it for the roses in Dreadscythe Harridans’s hair when I get that far.

I’ve used Rakarth Flesh for the bones with Reikland Fleshade. I’ve been drybrushing Rakarth Flesh over the Stirland Mud bases and sometimes Mechanicus Standard Grey stones - but I’d argue Corax White is better for the later.

Issue 23 / Liberators and Prosecutor (B Sprue)

This is a “B sprue” from an “ABB sprue” that was in the original Age of Sigmar boxed set and is now part of the Thunderstrike Brotherhood. Liberators are an older, robeless, cheaper, incarnation of Stormcast Eternal. Prosecutors have wings and fly on little scrolls.

Issue 24 / Lord-Executioner, Grimghast Reapers, Glaivewraith Stalkers (Soul Wars Sprue)

New Nighthaunt Reinforcements!

This is one of the sprues in Soul Wars, Tempest of Souls and Tempest of Souls with paint.

It’s a very nice sprue with 10 miniatures, but, there’s a snag. There are five Glaivewraiths (with the horse head) and four Reapers (with the scythes) along with a Lord-Executioner. Glaivewraith Stalkers are deployed in sets of four, and, Grimghast Reapers are deployed in groups of ten!

So I (and others) bought two of these magazines, and, converted two of the Glaivewraiths to be Reapers by swapping a normal skull on, sculpting a blindfold, and changing the glaive into a scythe.

Issue 25 / Paints

Rules for Magic in your Games
  • Shade / Agrax Earthshade
    • this is a full “24ml” pot of the stuff
    • this is the “brown” shade that ends up on most minis
    • the shade is fairly common in the “intro” paint sets; so if you see my desk I’m still using the 12ml pot I got from them
  • Base / Balthasar Gold
    • this is a fairly common but solid gold colour

Issue 26 - Azyrite Ruin

Issue 26 - Azyrite Ruin

This is/was sort of an accidental Mortal Realms Magazine exclusive. This magazine was issued in April 2020. No one believes me, but, this particular sculpt was only available in the Warcry Catacombs Core Box. The Warcry Catacombs Core Box was released in October 2020.

I’d guess that they had the copy ready to publish, with photos, but were behind on WarCry2 production. So - they cast the sprues and slipped the magazine out without telling anyone.

Issue 27 / Stormshire’s Cursebreakers

Issue 27 - Stormshire's Cursebreakers

These were the Stormcast Underworlds; Nightvault core warband, but, have “cycled out” and are now only sold without cards as an AoS Unit.

You can still find/print the cards for casual games.

For the Age of Sigmar version, they come as the usual “leader and posse” setup.

There’s a fairly swish dedicated carrying case

There’s also a case for ALL the warbands from their season.

The unit still makes for a cheap character in Age of Sigmar

This guy has a fantasic style of case

… and free name tags

Issue 28 / Spirit Hosts

Issue 28 - Spirit Hosts

This is a surprsingly concise battleline unit.

Spirit Hosts

Issue 29 / Paints

Magazine
  • Nuln Oil is a black shade that I (and most) find indeispensible for quickly making metallics and stones look “better”
  • Baneblade Brown is the “other” brown that has been my go-to for wood on the Nighaunt minis in the magazine
    • I always put a coat of Agrax Earthshade over the wood surfaces. The second “brown” darkens it down giving the result a nice amount of definition without … well … I just haven’t tried Nuln Oil over Baneblade Brown
    • This shouldn’t be confused with Dryad Bark which is a much darker brown. [Dryad Bark]() matches the colour of Stirland Mud texture paint

Issue 30 - Azyrite Ruin

Azyrite Ruin

Magazine

Issue 31 ; Lord-Exorcist

I bought one of these at retail for some reason - I gave it to a friend.

Issue 32 / Citadel Skulls

Citadel Skulls 32 Citadel Skulls 62

Both issues 32 and 62 have the same sprues of Citadel Skulls. Just get whichever is cheapest if you’re not worried about the magazine.

The skulls are also available in a retail box

Issue 33 / Paint and Tool

Magazine

Issue 34 - Dominion of Sigmar Statue

Magazine

This piece of plastic comes in two kits, each with their own rules;

Issue 35 / Liberators and Prosecutor (B Sprue)

This is a “B sprue” from an “ABB sprue” that was in the original Age of Sigmar boxed set and is now part of the Thunderstrike Brotherhood. Liberators are an older, robeless, cheaper, incarnation of Stormcast Eternal. Prosecutors have wings and fly on little scrolls.

Issue 36 - Azyrite Bell Tower

The kit is OOP and the issue doesn’t seem to be on sale anywhere!

Issue 37 - Gryph Hounds and Coelia Greenshade

The only green in the base magazine! A unit should have six, so, I got two of this issue to make up the full team.

… but … I haven’t gotten to them as of 2021-11-28 …

Issue 38 / Crawlocke the Jailor and two Chainghasts

He’s really just a “Spirit Torment” with “Chainghasts.” I found these a struggle to assemble - less glue dries quicker, and, I use blu-tak to pose the parts and allow them to dry with gravity holding pieces together.

Issue 39 / Cairn Wraith

Cairn Wraith - this is an old Vampire Counts model from the days of square bases in WarHammer Fantasy Battles. I found it much simpler than the Jailor and Chaingasts but I did end up with a large and noticable seam.

Issue 40 - Knight-Azyros

I wish I’d gotten two of this - there’s an alt build with a bird!

Issue 41 ; Stormcast Reinforcements (Age of Sigmar - A Sprue)

This is a “A sprue” from an “ABB sprue” that was in the original Age of Sigmar boxed set and is now part of the Thunderstrike Brotherhood. Mortal Realms seems to call these “A sprues” “Reinforcements” so you can plan your stuff like that I guess … I will.

Liberators are an older, robeless, cheaper, incarnation of Stormcast Eternal. Prosecutors have wings and fly on little scrolls.

Issue 42 / Paints and a Brush

Chamon, the Realm of Metal (Paints and Small Layer Brush)

Magazine

Issue 43 / Sacrosanct Reinforcements (Soul Wars - A Sprue)

This is a “A sprue” from an “ABB sprue” from Soul Wars. Another one of the sprues from Soul Wars.

Magazine

Issue 44 / Liekoron the Executioner

Liekoron the Executioner - a “Lord Executioner.” We’ve alreay had one of these from the Soul Wars sprues, but, this is a very different sculpt without the problematic device protruding from his back.

Issue 45 / Paints

Magazine

Issue 46 - Fallen Sigmar Statue

Fallen Sigmar Statue

Magazine

Issue 47 / The Farstriders

Magazine

This guy has a fantasic style of case

… and free name tags

Issue 48 / Reikenor the Grimhailer

I got a second one of these with the intent of using different painting style for it at the end.

Delusions of grandeur.

Issue 49 / Paints

Magazine

Issue 50 - Sigmarite Ruins

Magazine

Issue 51 - Lord-Ordinator

Magazine

Issue 52 / Chainrasp Horde

Chainrasp Horde

Issue 53 / Paints

Magazine

Issue 54 - Timeworn Ruin

Magazine

Issue 55 - Lord-Arcanum on Celestial Dracoline

Actually … it’s part of a set!

Issue 56 / Knight of Shrouds

We’ve got one of these, but, not this sculpt … or on foot? I think that this was my favourite of the “whispy” models as it was quite stable. I did not like the slotta base placement and I snipped the peg off of her flair-stone.

Issue 57 / Hexwraiths

This is the only non-leader calvary kit in the collection, and, my last unit. The groups were saying we/you should build these as “Black Knights” (Rules (AoS2) (AoS3)) for some reason. I disagreed … but it’s an easy enough option.

Issue 58 / Paints

Discover the Drakesworn Templars (Retributor Armour (Base, Gold) and Carroburg Crimson (Shade, Red) Paint)

Issue 59 - Evocators on Celestial Dracolines

Evocators on Celestial Dracolines

Issue 60 / Bladegheist Revenants (1 of 2)

Issue 61 - Sigmarite Altar and Bridges

Sigmarite Altar and Bridges

Issue 62 / Citadel Skulls

Citadel Skulls 62 Citadel Skulls 32

Boht issues 32 and 62 have the same sprues of Citadel Skulls. Just get whichever is cheapest if you’re not worried about the magazine.

The skulls are also available in a retail box Outpost Element

Issue 63 - Space Marine Judicators

Space Marine Judicators

Issue 64 / Grimghast Reapers

Grimghast Reapers

This is one of the twin sprues from the box Outpost Element

Issue 65 / Paints (Refill)

Corax White and Nihilanth Oxide

Issue 66 - Dominion of Sigmar Statue

Issue 67 - Lord-Arcanum Astrea Solbright

Fancy lady on fancy dragon beast!

Issue 68 / Bladegheist Revenants (2 of 2)

Issue 69 / Paints

Issue 70 / Kurdoss Valentian

Painted on 2022-02-15

Issue 71 - Enduring Stormvault (Gryph Hound Statue)

Enduring Stormvault (Gryph Hound Statue)

Two statues!

It’s part of the “Enduring Stormvault” set at Outpost Element .

Issue 72 / Lady Olynder

I was not expecting this kit to be a single issue.

She’s part of an interesting looking WarScroll Battalion with a set of Dreadscythe Harridans and two units of Myrmourn Banshees.

Issue 73 - Neave Blacktalon

The hero model from the “Blightwar” boxed set.

Issue 74 - Vanguard Raptors

They’re depicted with the oval bases - they have pet birbs which is more important to me.

Issue 75 - Mortis Engine (13)

Issue 76 - Mortis Engine (23)

Issue 77 - Mortis Engine (33)

Mortis Engine (1/3) Mortis Engine (2/3) Mortis Engine (3/3)

This became a “Soulblight Gravelords” unit. The same kt can build a “Coven Throne” or a “Bloodseeker Palanquin”

Issue 78 - Mortis Engine & Celestant-Prime Bases

Mortis Engine & Celestant-Prime Bases

This issue has the bases for both of the “centerpiece” models. Putting the two large bases in the issue is a cute trick to get us to buy both!

… but … I don’t think I’d mind if I’d doubled up - a few spare giant bases are probably cool.

Issue 79 - Celestant-Prime (12)

Issue 80 - Celestant-Prime (22)
